Spending a few weeks in the pediatric emergency department while pregnant has eased my parenting concerns considerably. I have spent much of my time doing something we refer to in the medical field as "reassurance." This consists of telling first time parents that their baby is just fine, is healthy as can be, and is lucky to have such concerned, observant parents. And then redirecting them home and reminding them to return only in the case of a true emergency.
